Seoul has been the capital since 1394, and it still keeps late hours.
Gyeongbokgung opens at nine and the guard changes at ten. Gwangjang market runs from breakfast to nearly midnight. Between the two sit the hanok lanes of Bukchon, a mountain with a tower on it, and a river with a night boat.
In Seoul, a rented hanbok is a free ticket into the palace.
Wear one through the gate at Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Deoksugung or Changgyeonggung and the admission charge is waived. Rental shops sit outside every gate, most of them stocked well past the tourist sizes, and the better tours build the fitting into the morning and hand the rest of the day back to you.

Korea’s border is a buffer four kilometres wide.
The Korean War stopped in 1953 with an armistice, not a peace treaty, and the strip of land either side of that line has been closed to ordinary use ever since. A day from Seoul is a coach north, a control point, and whichever observatory and tunnel the itinerary lists.
Bring the passport you booked under — identification is checked before the bus goes through, and operators cannot substitute a name on the day. Half-day runs are back in the city for a late lunch; full days usually add Imjingak or one of the suspension bridges.

An hour east of Seoul the day repeats itself: island, garden, rail bike.
Namiseom is a half-moon of river island planted with metasequoia. The Gangchon rail bike pedals a decommissioned railway line above the Bukhan River. The Garden of Morning Calm lights up after dark through the winter. Operators sell them in twos and threes, with Petite France or an alpaca farm bolted on.
Busan keeps its beaches at the bottom and Gamcheon’s painted hillside at the top.
The coastal train runs Haeundae to Songjeong along the old line, close enough to the water to get spray on the glass. Gamcheon climbs the slope behind the city in blocks of colour. And Gyeongju, capital of Silla for the best part of a thousand years, is an hour up the road with its burial mounds still standing in the middle of town.

Jeju is one volcano, one World Heritage listing and a road all the way round.
Hallasan stands in the middle of the island. Seongsan Ilchulbong is the tuff cone on the eastern corner that people climb before breakfast. Manjanggul runs underneath it all as a lava tube. Day tours split east and west because nobody sensibly does both in one go.

A palace morning, a border coach, a car for the day: Korea’s four price steps.
Every published review sorted by its lead price. Most are per person; the top step is usually a licensed guide and a vehicle quoted for the whole party, so read it as a day rate to split.

You can leave Incheon and be standing at a palace gate within the hour.
Immigration is fast, the airport express reaches Seoul Station in about forty-five minutes, and the left-luggage desks are on the arrivals floor. Under six hours and the sensible answer stays near the airport; six and up and the city is genuinely reachable with room to spare.

Jinhae holds the big cherry week and it runs as a day trip out of Busan. The maples come down the peninsula through late October and early November. From January the Eobi valley freezes solid and the resorts an hour from Seoul open their slopes to people who have never seen snow.
The haenyeo, the rail bike and the fortress wall.
Temples and food halls turn up across the region. These three do not: a diving tradition on one island, a railway line that outlived its trains, and a walled city built for a capital that never moved.
The Haenyeo
The haenyeo are Jeju’s women free-divers. They work without air, hold a breath for around two minutes and surface on a whistling exhale called sumbisori. The practice went onto the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list in 2016, and most of the divers still working are in their sixties and seventies. On the water they are at work, not on display — the tours worth booking are the ones that treat it that way.

The Rail Bike
When the Gyeongchun line was rebuilt for faster trains, the old track through Gangchon was left where it was and fitted with pedal cars. You freewheel roughly eight kilometres downhill beside the Bukhan River, through a lit tunnel, and a shuttle train carries you back to the start. It is the reason half the Gapyeong day trips exist at all.

The Fortress Wall
Hwaseong was built in the 1790s by King Jeongjo for a capital that in the end never moved. Around five and a half kilometres of wall still ring central Suwon, complete with its command posts and floodgates, and the full circuit is an afternoon on foot. It went onto the World Heritage list in 1997 and the city simply grew around it.
